The following scouting activities are available to girls through the Prairie
Winds Council's "North Star" program guide or scheduled directly with
Tammy at the TLD Design Center. The activities are held here at our
facility in Westmont, IL, unless your
troop size exceeds our maximum capacity for the selected activity. Most of
our activities may also be scheduled to meet at your location. With
a traveling activity, we will provide an assistant, knowledgeable in the

The girls will create their own artistic doll from a prepared fabric form.
The girls will learn about surface design by using markers, stamps and paint
pens to decorate the doll body, they will stuff the doll and hand
sew the bottom of the doll. The girls will then go on to embellish and
personalize their doll with beads and fibers. High quality materials will
be supplied. Ages 10 and up.

Girls will
breathe new life into older or discarded objects as they create art for the
house. This is a great recycling project as girls should look for old
garage sale or Salvation army items that can be collaged over and restore
the item into a usable, decorative piece. The finished objects are fun and
artsy. This is a 2 session activity with 1 1/2 hrs scheduled for each
session. Each girl should bring an item to collage such as: a small bedroom
lamp w/shade, picture frame, glass vase, pair of wood bookends, wood or glass
tissue box cover. Collage materials and finishing supplies are
included in the class fee. Ages 8 and up. Min 4 / Max 8

1 session of 2 hours. Using our crochet hooks and yarn during the class time, girls will learn how to create a chain and learn how to link (slip stitich) the chain into a lattice pattern. With these skills, girls can go on to create a lacey scarf, shawl or even a decorative bedspread. Each girl will go home with enough of Tammy's hand-dyed cotton chenille yarn to create her own great looking scarf (see example on the photo page). Crochet hooks to take home must be purchased separately. (available in the design center) Min. 4 / Max. 10 Ages 9 and up.

2 sessions of 1 1/2 hours. Girls will make their own collage journal /
book from scratch during this two session activity. Session #1 girls will design and collage the front and back
cover using new and recycled materials. Session #2 the girls will learn how to bind their
journals and embellish them with beads, fibers and found objects. Materials will
be supplied, but girls may bring photos or bits of ribbon, paper, dried leaves or personal (mostly flat) mementos that are OK to be converted permanently into their journal cover. Min. 4 Max. 8

Girls will learn basic knitting skills during this 2 hour class. Using our knitting needles and yarn during the class time, girls will learn how to cast on, do the basic knit stitch and how to cast off. With these skills, girls can go on to knit a simple scarf, belt, purse (some sewing assembly required). Each girl will go home with enough yarn to knit a scarf in cotton chenille (hand dyed by Tammy) on size 11 needles. Needles to take home must be purchased separately for $4.50 pair. Min. 4 / Max. 10 Ages 9 and up.

Girls will advance their basic knitting skills during this 2 hour class. Using studio knitting needles and yarn we provide, girls will learn how to do the purl stitch and knit a sampler piece that combines knit and purl combinations. Girls will learn the stockinette stitch, seed stitch and ribbing....if time allows they will learn to how to make simple increases and decreases. Needles to take home must be purchased separately for $4.50 pair. Min. 4 / Max. 10 Ages 9 and up.

New Activity 2007

During this 2 hour activity, girls will be
introduced to oven-bake, polymer clay with this fun whimsical project.
Each girl will hand form one to two pieces from this special polymer clay that
is a real
eraser once it's baked. Patty will guide them as they create an easy,
sculpted "Eraser-Head" for their pencils. The pieces will
be baked in an oven....and once they've cooled, girls can go home with their
finished pieces. Ages

During this 2 hour class, girls will learn how to create their own beads cut from a previous troop's canes. While the beads are baking, girls will go on to create the canes that the next group of girls will use for their bead making class. They will be taught how to create a "bulls-eye" cane and how to manipulate that cane into a "flower" cane. Once their beads have come out of the oven and cooled, the girls will go on to string their beads, along with some spacer beads, and complete a bracelet they can wear home that day. Ages 9 and up. During this 2 hour class, girls will learn how to create their own little fold out book complete with a polymer clay front and back cover they've created. Girls will design the cover pieces and may include stamped, carved, or shaped designs and will use special pigment chalks to hand color them. While the covers are baking, girls will create the accordian folded pages. The covers come out of the oven and once cooled....girls will assemble their books to take home that day. Ages 9 and up. Girls will learn about different fibers, how to comb them and spin them into a yarn suitable for knitting, weaving or crochet. Girls will keep the yarn they spin and will receive a simple spinning hook to take home. They will also learn how to use a drop spindle which may be purchased separately. Girls that pick-up the drop spindle action may even go on to try their hand on a spinning wheel. Min. 4 / Max 8 Ages 10 and up.

A great introduction to hand sewing skills that results in funky, fun hats for the girls to keep. Girls will learn how we recycle wool sweaters into new wearable designs. They will have their choice from 3 different hat patterns, cut the pieces and hand sew them together using their choice of fun fibers and yarns. Please bring 1 old sweater for every 2 girls attending the activity. The sweaters must have a 70% to 100% wool fiber content (lambswool, angora, shetland, and mohair are all acceptable fibers) Sweaters with a few holes and/or spots o.k. Please understand that the girls will not be using the sweaters they bring to class....they will be using other recycled sweaters from our stash. The sweaters brought to class will be recycled for other classes to use in the future. Min. 4 / Max 10 Ages 8 and up.

Girls will be using a variety of designer and novelty yarns on a prepared cardboard loom, together with a weaving needle to create a small pouch style necklace. Girls will weave their piece, twist the strap and do some bead embellishment and finishing during the activity. They will leave with a finished piece. High quality materials will be supplied. Ages 12 and up.

1 session of 1 hour. Girls will learn
how to hand apply dyes and create their own skein of colorful painted yarn...
suitable for knitting, crochet and other fiber art projects.
Tammy will teach them about fiber reactive dyes which are widely used in the
textile industry. Each girl will be provided with a 3 oz of a natural
colored cotton chenille yarn and use studio equipment and dyes. Girls will
bring the yarn home in a plastic bag to be rinsed and dried 24 hours
later ***Girls should wear old clothes and bring rubber gloves
and a plastic grocery bag to the activity. Ages 10 and up. Min. 4 / Max. 10
