Swatches will be large enough to incorporate in hats or even French flowers made during our other millinery construction classes for completely custom, original work. Students should wear old clothes to class and bring rubber gloves and a 38" square piece of plastic. All other tools and dye will be provided through the class fee.

HATMAKING:
Instructor: Jan Wutkowski of www.hatshatshats.com
Interested in learning to block high-end millinery straws into big brimmed beauties for Summer? Want to add a one-of-a-kind silk flower as embellishment? Class will use a millinery capelines to block crowns into several available shapes, plus block OR wire sculpt a brim shape for added style. Steam blocking will allow for specialty shapes formed from the quintessential millinery tool--the hatblock. But wire sculpting the brim gives even more style possibilities, and you have the chance to choose between the two methods. After creating your hat we will learn the almost forgotten French method for making silk flowers--one petal at a time. These are NOT ribbon flowers, but ones created with brass flowermaking tools, available in class. Your finished product will truly reflect your style and fashion 'look'--a beautiful parisisal straw hat embellished with a unique silk flower. Many couture finishing tips will also be demonstrated.
Class meets: Saturday & Sunday from 9:30am to 5:00pm
Class Date: May 16th & 17th

This technique creates a great, contemporary looking rope suitable for necklaces as it is quite supple and strong. Great for a lariat, choker or bracelet, it has a little give to it due to the crochet stitches. Lampworkers love this rope to showcase special beads and pendants. Once finished, you can hardly see the thread! Students will learn on a gentle spiral pattern which makes it easier to see the stitches. Other design variations will be discussed. Students must already be very comfortable with basic crocheting stitches when they take this class (learn how to crochet in our beginners class shown above). The materials are simple: size 6 seed beads (size 10 seeds make a finer rope) and crochet cotton thread. Bring your reading glasses and, if you have them, magnifying glasses to this class since the beads are tiny!
Class Meets: Tuesday from 6pm to 9pm

This class is a great introduction to bead knitting for students that already know very basic hand knitting stitches and how to cast on/off (take our knitting I & II classes). The great thing about these is that they look hard but are actually very simple. On day one, students will get a great start toward making their own heirloom űuality knitted, beaded "mad money" purse based off of Victorian designs. On Day two, students will shape the flap, sew the seams, create the neck-strap and embellish....with more beads, no doubt! Samples can be viewed (or purchased) in our gallery. Beginner's and seasoned felters are invited to come and play with this fun, unusual process that by-passes knitting and sewing capitalizing on the natural attributes of animal hair to turn yarn and roving into a "holy" fabric. If you've seen this scarf in the gallery or in Tammy's booth during an art fair, she has it labeled as felt lace....but it's not really the same approach. Certainly some of the wet steps are similar...if you've already taken the felt lace class....but there's enough of a difference to warrant a separate class.
